Explores personal ambition and how unanticipated consequences lead to new realities set against a modern day empire in transition. Jurgen is the playboy second son. That means he is second in line to succeed his father as Chancellor of the empire known as Eutopia. Knowing he has little to lose, he fans public discontent as he voices an alternative to his Father’s vision for the future. He takes calculated risks to build popular support in a very undemocratic society. Turning ever increasing adversity to his advantage, and even when ultimately banished, he plots and positions to succeed his father at the expense of his older brother, the heir apparent. As he gains stature within key parts of the government and a popular following, he begins to question his quest, his lust for power, methods and even himself. He observes his entire family suffering the unforeseen consequences of his behavior and decisions. However, he has now opened Pandora’s Box and must find a way to control what he unleashed.

Succession is a superb futuristic tale set one hundred years from now. In it, a broad collection of nations formerly known as Europe now exist as Eutopia, and it's a dictatorship disguised as an empire.

Two brothers vie for the top spot in the Empire, but Horst, the eldest sibling, is next in line for the role of Chancellor -- that is, as soon as their father, Karl Peter, passes on, which doesn't appear to be an imminent prospect.

An incursion by neighboring Russia angers and upsets Jurgen, the younger brother. His father's limp reaction to the invasion and subsequent capture of a small number of Eutopian troops further inflames Jurgen, but he is powerless to do anything about it.

But he makes it abundantly clear that if he were Chancellor, he would make the Soviets pay. In fact, he leads a daring rescue across the border and achieves widespread acclaim. But his father continues to dither about taking further punitive action, which drives Jurgen wild.

His brother, meanwhile, falls ill, leading Jurgen to hope for an improved chance at moving up in the order of succession. But instead, he is sent to the Mideast, where he acts decisively against clerics who have been advocating a holy war against the West. He orders executions of the leaders in retaliation for terrorism -- and overnight the suicide bombings end.

Jurgen's popularity once again rises, but he cannot parlay the groundswell of sentiment into an advantage at home.

Can Jurgen convince Karl Peter that significant change is needed to assure the Empire's continued existence? Will he finally bypass his brother and seize the reins of power? And, in a romantic side plot, will he at last pursue the affections of a certain nightclub performer?

The denouement of this knotted skein of adventure and deceit is at once surprising and satisfying. But the story’s many threads are tied up nicely as the book thunders to a close.

Succession deserves a full five stars for its riveting plotline, dominated as it is by intense internecine warfare and illusions of global power held tenaciously by the frighteningly believable bad guys. It’s a thoroughly satisfying novel that will keep you up reading well beyond your normal bedtime.
